The 2023 edition of the Wanda Diamond League Meeting de Paris was both exceptional and historic thanks to world records for Faith Kipyegon in the 5,000 m and Lamecha Girma in the 3,000 m steeplechase, as well as the world best performance ever for Jakob Ingebrigtsen over 2 miles. The 2024 vintage, due to take place less than a month before the start of the Paris Olympics, is set to be epic given the programme presented this Tuesday.
The women’s 100 m, a race where the Jamaicans and Americans have really been firing on all cylinders for a number of seasons, the men’s 200 m, utterly dominated right now by the superstar Noah Lyles, and the men’s pole vault, marked by a flurry of records by Mondo Duplantis and the rise to fame of Thibaut Collet, will be just some of the events to grip the attention of one and all. The men and women’s 3,000 m steeplechase will also set the mood, with the potential for a number of records to tumble.
Races where the Blues will play the leading roles
The Fédération Française d’Athlétisme (French Athletics Federation), event organiser, was eager to enable France’s top athletes to reveal their true potential before a home crowd. And that is exactly what they’ve done, with a series of unmissable events on the programme, including the men’s 110 m hurdles, 400 m hurdles and 800 m, races in which the Blues intend to be the stars of the show. Out on the field, in addition to the men’s pole vault, the women’s discus is sure to be a showstopper as it has long since taken centre stage in metropolitan France thanks to the unstoppable Mélina Robert-Michon. Of note, outside the Wanda Diamond League ranking, is the men and women’s 4x100 m, which is the perfect way to lift the mood another notch for the spectators, whilst enabling the athletes to tweak their performance one last time before the Games.
After securing a full house for the 2023 edition, the grandstands of the Charléty Stadium should quickly be bursting at the seams for Sunday 7 July, as Olympic fever takes hold.
